Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon for Breast Augmentation

Choosing the right plastic surgeon to perform your breast augmentation procedure involves more than just choosing a name from the phone
book or the plastic surgery facility closest to your house. It calls for some research and careful decision-making.

Breast augmentation is major surgery. It requires anesthesia and incisions and you will need to set aside time for recovery. Although the risks
are low, it is important to understand what they are and how they can best be avoided.

Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon for Breast Augmentation

An experienced plastic surgeon who cares about you as an individual will explain this during your initial consultation and will answer all your
questions clearly. He or she will also help you make the decisions involved with breast augmentation, such as what size and type of implant
and which incision location would be best for you.

Plastic Surgery Board Certification

The qualifications of your plastic surgeon should be looked at closely and determining whether he or she is board-certified is a good start.

The
American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the oldest and the most respected medical credentialing organization in the U.S. It
is the umbrella organization for many specialty boards. Each member board focus on a medical area recognized as a specialty and conducts
training and examinations for doctors who would like to enter one of those specialties. The
American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)
certifies plastic surgeons, including cosmetic surgeons. Cosmetic surgery is plastic surgery done for a cosmetic reason.

During your consultation, the cosmetic surgeon should show you some form of Before and After photos of his work. They provide a visual
indicator of his or her plastic surgery skill and may be in a binder or on a computer and sometimes also on the walls. You could also ask to
speak to former patients who have undergone the same procedure you are considering. Most qualified and successful cosmetic surgeons
have a list of patients who have agreed to speak about their surgery experience with others.

Working Well with Your Plastic Surgeon

You can probably decide quickly if the plastic surgeon you are speaking with would be a good choice. In talking with him, do you feel he is
listening? Are your questions answered clearly? Does the facility feel well-organized and friendly? If you go ahead with breast augmentation,
you will be interacting quite a lot with your cosmetic surgeon, not only before your procedure but also after it, with a series of follow-up visits.
So choose a plastic surgeon with whom you feel comfortable and confident. While it is important that he listens to your goals and concerns, it
is also important that you listen to his advice and instructions.
